Description
There are not many churches that we entered that weren't highly decorated except those from the Gothic period. The Church of St. Louis of the French was no exception, but something about it struck me. I think it was the predominating and repetitive use of gold and white on the ceiling. Please don’t rush over to Rome to San Luigi dei Francesi to confirm this as you will quickly see that the designer and builder did not hesitate to guild anything they could find that was stuck to the ceiling or walls. For myself and my camera it was the gold and white repetitive patterns of this piece of the ceiling that remained in my head. An additional attribute that is striking is that the two sculptures look as if they just flew into those locations and took up residence. Maybe there is a look of awe as to their good fortune in landing just here. The appearance of recent arrival is heightened by the legs and toes of cherubs hanging over the frame of the arch. They seem to be hanging on with some verve.
